The town of Sarchí is the country’s main crafts hub. Nearly 200 shops and studios in and around town sell handmade arts and crafts, many of them fashioned from wood.

Much of the misconception that Costa Rica is not a shopping destination comes from the fact that the country is not home to major retailers of luxury goods. So, admittedly, Costa Rica is not New York or Paris. However, Costa Rica still has much to offer the shopper who wants to venture beyond standard retail fare. For starters, the Central Market in San José has a huge variety of diverse goods.

The massive covered marketplace has everything from locally produced leather belts and purses to hearty local coffees. Those with an eye for arts and crafts will want to venture to the town of Sarchí. There are nearly 200 shops and studios in and around the town that sell hand painted figurines and wooden artisanship. Boutique shopping is also increasingly available throughout the country. Shoppers with an eye for high-end products will discover shops selling necklaces and bracelets created by local jewelers, while those with more casual tastes will find Costa Rican beachwear and locally shaped surfboards. Costa Rica’s shopping is as unique and colorful as the country itself.
