“Sodas” are informal, family-run restaurants where the typical Costa Rican cuisine of delicious, local seafood, fresh tropical fruits and vegetables and organic chicken and beef are served.

upper food banner Costa Rica may be a small country, but it offers a large variety of local and international cuisine. In the major tourist towns, the capital city of San José‚ and its surrounding areas, it is easy to find restaurants that serve Italian, Chinese, Mexican, Japanese, French, North American or other types of cuisine. Restaurants range from small, charming beachfront spots to luxurious white tablecloth affairs with waiters in tuxedos. Local Costa Rican food is called “Comida Típica,” meaning “typical food.” It is generally comprised of a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, rice, black beans, seafood, chicken and beef. Try the rainbow of “batidos” (fresh fruit smoothies) made with either water or milk.

The choices can be overwhelming, from the well known banana, watermelon, cantaloupe, papaya, blackberry, pineapple and carrot to the more obscure tamarind fruit, custard fruit, guanabana and many fruits that have no name in English like the spiny, sweet “mamones chinos.” Also, make sure to drink the water straight from a cold green coconut, preferably when you are on the beach. Costa Rican food is served in conventional restaurants and “sodas,” which are basically a combination between a casual, family-run restaurant and a corner store.
